New students must phone ahead before attending Mysore-style Ashtanga classes*.  It is not necessary to phone ahead for any other  classes. Classes
are ongoing and you can begin anytime. The teacher is always happy to help you and answer your questions.

What You Need
for Class

Bring a yoga mat. Do not bring other kinds of exercise mats because they will not work for yoga.  Yoga mats are often called "sticky mats" and are thin rubber or pvc plastic that give you firm footing for standing poses.  We sell all kinds of mats starting at $14.98. You can also buy yoga mats at many large department stores or sporting goods stores. You can also rent a mat for regular classes for $1.

Hot Yoga:  bring a sticky mat, a bath towel (or hot yoga cloth mat) and a bottle of water. You can rent a mat for hot yoga for $2 and a towel for $3.

DO NOT BRING:

  • any kind of glass or breakable bottle or container to the studio.

  • food, drinks or chewing gum into the studio.

  • any kind of valuables or jewelry. Lock your purse or wallet in the trunk of your car. Do not leave items of value in the dressing rooms.

Yoga East is not responsible for lost or stolen items.

What to Wear

Exercise clothing such as T-shirts, shorts and stretchy pants that allow freedom of movement. Appropriate yoga wear is found in many department stores.

Do not wear jeans, street clothes, bulky clothes, revealing or see-thru clothes such as Speedos, thongs, etc... Yoga is practiced in bare feet - no panty hose, and remember to remove your socks.

Yoga Class
Etiquette

Be on time for class!  Come several minutes early if you need to register or change clothes so that you can be in your place, on your mat, ready to begin at the start time for class. Students who come in late or who leave early disrupt the class and this is disrespectful to both the teacher and the other students.

Turn off your cell phone.

Remove your watch and jewelry that might get in your way.

Remove shoes on entering the studio. Leave your shoes on the shoe rack or in the cubbies in the dressing rooms.

New to Yoga?
Recommended Classes

Hatha Yoga, Gentle Yoga, Hot Yoga, Pilates and Ashtanga Slow Flow are all recommended for new yoga students.

If you are a senior, have not exercised in a while, are out of shape or overweight, go to Gentle Yoga or Hatha Yoga classes until you are comfortable with the pace of classes. Then ask your teacher for more recommendations.
